Abstract

Arielmy was born in the Dominican Republic in 1998 and moved to the U.S. at the age of three with her older brother and her mother to join her father in New Jersey.  In this interview we discuss her migration story and the reasons for her migration north, yet the focus is her life and experience in the U.S. Ariel identifies herself as an Afro-Latina. Ariel reflects on what it means to be black and latinx in the U.S. as well as how she is seen and treated by U.S. society. Ariel also speaks about her education and her experience with bilingual education and as a latinx person in the education system.  Finally, Ariel reflects on her identity as a mixed-cultural being, as a bilingual being, as a person of color, as a woman, as an immigrant, as a U.S. citizen and as a student.
